Dodge is making power moves, literally.

Clearly all the positive press about the Hellcat twins has gone to Dodge's head. They're attention hungry and have apparently figured out a way to best …. well … damn near everybody. Some forced air in the 8.4L V10 would definitely get it's power level up from the paltry 640hp it currently makes, right passed 707hp, and maybe even on to 800hp. EIGHT HUNDRED FREAKING HORSEPOWER.

Kinja'd!!!

We already know the Viper is due for an update in 2016 from Chrysler/Fiat's 5-year plan. This could very well be what the beast needs to get out of it sales slump. It would take some work to get a supercharger into that tight engine bay, I for one hope they find a way.

I'm assuming it would be a centrifugal supercharger. Some people commented before that the Viper wouldn't get the hellcat engine due to the height of it, with its twin screw setup.

You know I don't think the Viper needs more horsepower. Maybe it does but 50 more at the most. I think it needs to become more modern. I hate saying that because I love the car but if it becomes more modern sales might increase. And I want a roadster I have been waiting too long not to have one by now

Where the hell are they going to cram the blower? If I recall the hellcat has a 1.8 litre blower, that is bigger than my ENGINE.

EDIT: 2.4 litres! THAT IS 50% BIGGER THAN MY FiST ENGINE!

If, and that's a big if, supercharged V10s are going to appear in the Viper, 800+HP would be on conservatively low boost to preserve weak internals. Turn up the boost, and you could easily see power levels well into the 900's. A very good tune would help that number into the 4 digit range.

Great point. I think every supercharged production car is twin screw, they could just tool up a new hood and x-brace to make it fit. I know the head designer of the Viper, but I know he wouldn't say due to confidentiality and what not.

I think they would if it steals sales. I still highly doubt they can/will fit a supercharger in that engine bay. The viper needs refinement, not MOAR POWER. If anything a lighter engine would be what they need, not more weight.

Lol nice reference. But it is supercharged not turbo'd, so its linear power and not peaky.

One of the Viper's trademarks has always been the insane naturally aspirated V10. And I'm a Viper purist. But in this case, I think the character of the Viper should outweigh the technical bloodline. And more power=more insanity

Kinja'd!!! Mike > JR1
08/20/2014 at 13:36

Kinja'd!!!0

The point of the Viper is basically to have a cheap-ish, crude-ish supercar that demands respect for its ridiculous power, lest it tear your face off and throw you into a ditch. Driveability has never been a primary concern.

I really, truly, and seriously doubt that the Viper is of any concern to Ferrari. After all if you can afford any Ferrari you can also afford a Viper to park along side it.

Natural aspiration was never a trademark....it just was a thing. Its trademark has been insanity, which it needs more of.

Kinja'd!!! ViperGuy21 > Evan, Pope Of Jalopnik by Self-Appointment
08/20/2014 at 14:01

Kinja'd!!!0

Trademark was just a bad choice of wording. The Viper has always had natural aspiration, double bubble roof, long hood, etc..

It's trademark(meaning only having 1 trademark) is being able to scare you and put a smile on your face indefinitely

Comparing the Viper to a Corvette is like comparing apples to apples. I'm not saying they're the same. I'm from the PNW (Pacific North West, for all you who don't know), so I know my apples. Here, comparing Viper and Corvette is like comparing Honeycrisps and Fujis. You're going to pay a metric fuckton more for the Honeycrisps (Viper in this analogy), but you're going to get larger, better quality fruit. Bottom line is, Honeycrisps are better, and the only ones who buy them (they're expensive!), are people who care about what they're getting.

TL;DR I'm in Redmond right now and feel like going to the store to buy some apples. I traveled 2700 miles from Austin to Redmond, and I want apples! Also, Viper is best, and a reflection of the fact that there are very few of them is that I only saw two of them, over 2700 miles of road.
